Oblivion Gate's are gateways to the Daedric Planes of Oblivion ruled over by their respective Daedric Princes. Travelling through a gate is instantaneous and the traveller will instantly appear in a plane of Oblivion. The Majority of Oblivion Gate's in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion lead to the Daedric Plane of Oblivion ruled over by Mehrunes Dagon known as the Deadlands. Closing a gate is accomplished by locating and removing the Sigil Stone that anchors the gate to Tamriel. This stone is found in the Sigillum Sanguis at the top of the main tower within the plane of Oblivion the gate leads to.
