Soul gems are items that trap the souls of enemy monsters so they can be used for enchanting items. Once the monster has had Soultrap cast on it you can kill it and its soul will be transferred to the smallest soul gem it can fit into.

Soul Gems can be bought at most magic shops and can be found in random loot throught all Cyrodiil.

Types of Soul Gems

Black Soul Gems

Black Soul Gems are special soul gems in the fact that they can capture NPC's Souls. Normal soul gems can only trap creature's souls. It is because of Necromancy that these exist and they are thought to be nothing but evil by most.

Once filled a Black Soul Gem is used like a regular Grand Soul Gem.

Azura's Star

The most powerful Soul Gem in the Game, obtained from Azura in Azura's Daedric Quest. It functions just like a Grand Soul Gem and it is not used up when used so it has an infinite number of uses. It cannot be made into a Black Soul Gem unlike other Grand Soul Gems which means it can't hold NPC's souls.
